What is Geotagging/Mapping?

Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to geotagged photographs. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, Our session will demonstrate the tagging of a historical spot in the community and ideas for successful submission and acceptance to the Google Earth community. ;)

Why Tag?

As most of you have heard of the Google Earth Street View Car. If you have ever been on Google Maps, you know there is an option to look at your location from street view. The Google Earth Street View Car takes pictures of every single road in America that is public property, and then uploads them onto Google Maps. The only problem with that is, Google Earth Street View Car can not access private property. This is where geotagging is important because you might have access where the Google Earth Street View Car might not.

How Do I Tag?

GPS enabled Cameras - Cameras that automatically obtain a location's/photo's coordinates (latitude and longitude)

A GPS (Global Positioning System) enabled camera will attach latitude and longitude information to your pictures extension (EXIF information). This is called a geotag. Some cameras will even attach levels of elevation and compass bearings. This data will let people know exactly where you were when you took the photo. When placed in Panoramio, the photo will be dropped in the exact location of the photo.
Just 2 of the many cameras that geotag:

Photo Composition:

There are a lot of things that make a good photo! Here are a few things to help:
  • When you take your photo for the area that you are geotagging, make sure that you use good lighting!
  • Try taking the photo at a time of day when you can use the sun to your advantage.
  • Avoid making your photo too dark.
  • Shadows are elements that cannot be avoided, but they can be used to help exaggerate depth and lighting.
